Breaking News on HIV -- Researchers May Have Found A Cure!
If researchers are right about their recent HIV discovery, it could save thousands of lives, especially among African Americans. Why? Because HIV is the 5th leading cause of death for Black men and the 7th leading cause of death for Black women between the ages of 25-44.
Has a cure been found?
Researchers at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia found a way to destroy the HIV-1 virus from human cells. This is groundbreaking because it has never been done before. The research team, lead by Kamel Khalili, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Temple, were able to turn HIV infected cells into cells that were free from infection.
Professor Khalili stated that the results were successful in the lab. The next steps will be to test the procedure on animals and then humans. It may be a long time before a confirmed cure can be announced, but the recent breakthrough definitely puts us on the right road.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of new HIV infections among African Americans is 8 times greater than among whites, making African Americans the racial/ethnic group most affected by HIV.
