4 Common Skin Care Problems For African American Women

Black woman with skin problem

Generally speaking, skin is skin and most all people have very similar skin problems, such as acne, enlarged pores and even wrinkles. But there are certain kinds of skin care problems that are much more prevalent among African Americans, especially African American women.

These 4 skin care problems affect black women the most:
  1. Ingrown hairs - because black hair is curly, it is also more prone to becoming ingrown. Ingrown hairs that become trapped under the skin can lead to skin irritation and even infection.
  2. Hyperpigmentation - since black skin contains more of the skin pigment melanin, hyperpigmentation is more pronounced. Hyperpigmentation is when there is an overproduction of melanin in the skin, causing dark spots to appear on the skin.
  3. Keloids - keloids are abnormal scar tissue. Damaged skin can scar, but keloids develop when the scar tissue expands and can even become raised. For unknown reasons, black skin is more susceptible to the development of keloids.
  4. Eczema - this is a skin condition that many people suffer from, but it occurs twice as often in black skin. Eczema is dry, itchy red skin rashes that usually develop inside the elbows, behind the knees, on the neck, around the eyes and on the cheeks.

What to do about these skin problems

Some skin conditions such as eczema can be helped with simple fixes like vaseline petroleum jelly. Other conditions may need professional help from a dermatologist. When you do need to consult with a dermatologist, make sure they have knowledge and experience in treating African American skin problems.
