Belly fat often comes with age, but it can happen to anyone. Once you have it, it's hard to get rid of it. But the good news is that anyone can have a flat tummy, IF you are willing to work at it. Exercise alone will not do it. Here are 3 simple steps, recommended by The Mayo Clinic, that will help you trim down and eliminate that spare tire around your waist:
#1 - Eat healthy: This is a very important one. Don't look at it as a diet; it's changing your entire way of eating. You have to cut out most of the sweets and fat-laden foods and replace them with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Labels on food will tell you if it contains saturated fat, which is bad, or unsaturated fats. Moderate amounts of unsaturated fats found in fish, nuts and vegetable oils are a better choice.
#2 - Eat Less: Now that you've changed your eating habits, it doesn't mean you can eat all you want. Most people eat too much, so watch your portion sizes and eat sensibly. If you eat more of the right kinds of food, they will fill you up more and take care of hunger pains.
#3 - Exercise: Yes, you knew this one was coming. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends brisk walking for at least 150 minutes a week, or vigorous aerobic activity or jogging for at least 75 minutes a week. Mix in some strength training exercises at least twice a week.
Don't be in a hurry
Take it slow and easy and be realistic about results. Losing 2 pounds per week is a healthy way to lose weight. Once you start losing and seeing the belly fat disappear, you'll be hooked on a new and healthy way of living.
