These Popular Hair Styles For Black Women Can Cause Severe Hair Loss!

Black woman with hair loss

Popular hair styles among black women include braids, tight ponytails, locks, weaves and extensions. They may look fabulous but they are also responsible for a dreaded side effect -- hair loss.

How hair styles can cause hair loss

One in three black women suffer from a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is gradual hair loss from damage to the hair follicle caused by tension at the hair root. According to researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, it is the most common type of hair loss among black women.

Hair loss and scalp damage caused by root tension was revealed in 19 recent studies by Johns Hopkins University. The link is definitely something that researchers and dermatologists are concerned about. Assistant professor of dermatology at Hopkins, Dr. Crystal Aguh, stated that "some hair styles meant to improve our self-confidence actually lead to hair and scalp damage."

Hair loss can be prevented

This type of hair loss can be prevented, however, by alternating hair styles. The study hopes to reach black women in an effort to help them reverse the effects of traction alopecia and educate them on the danger of hair styles that pull at hair roots. Researchers emphasize that early intervention can stop or reverse this type of hair loss.
