Therapy For Black Girls Platform to Erase Stigma About Mental Health

Therapy For Black Girls to Erase Stigma About Mental Health

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a psychologist from Atlanta, aims to change the way people think about mental health specifically in Black women. She launched the online platform TherapyForBlackGirls.com with hopes to eliminate the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental illness within minorities.
"I wanted to create a platform that allowed Black women to connect to mental health topics in a way that felt relevant and accessible to them," Bradford told the Huffington Post.

As a former college counselor, Bradford has been well-aware of the lack of mental health resources for Black women. Hence, she became inspired to create a platform that would help them conquer the challenges.

The Therapy for Black Girls platform features over 700 therapists that specialize in working with women of color. It also has a blog where women can bravely share with each other their experiences and how they overcame it.

The platform also gives a spotlight to everything, from dealing with the aftermath of a sexual assault to emotional eating. Bradford also made sure to include the things she thinks are lacking in other mental health conversations, which is self-care and wellness.

The online community started in 2014. Since then, it has gathered over 32,000 members, ages 18 to 55.

"A lot of us, culturally, have been taught to keep things in-house. So, the idea of going to a stranger and telling them some very personal things feels foreign. Seeing people able to connect so easily with one another is very encouraging, and I know the work I'm doing is making an impact," Bradford said.
