Former Rapper Writes and Releases New Cookbook -- While in Prison!

Former rapper Albert “Prodigy” Johnson of the hip-hop duo Mobb Deep was sentenced to prison in 2007 for illegally possessing a firearm. Since then, he has been making good use of his time there by writing his own cookbook entitled Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook.
Although Johnson wanted to create a healthy eating cookbook, not everything in his cookbook is 100 percent healthy. But it's good! His cookbook has delicious recipes for curry gravy, macaroni and tuna salads, baked seafood with vegetables and sweet potato pie.

What it is like to cook in prison

In the building where Johnson is, he has to share a microwave and a toaster oven with up to 40 other inmates. On top of that, he can't always get the healthy ingredients he wants. But it's much better than most prison meals which sometimes are so bad they cause the inmates to riot. And he could always find green beans, onions, garlic and curry powder which is in many of his cookbook recipes.

In addition to wanting to eat healthy to control his sickle cell, he also said that cooking in the prison kitchen was relaxing. The group he cooks with are there because they also enjoy cooking, so, as he says, "they are cool with each other." He was also fortunate enough to have an inmate from the Virgin Islands who had been a chef, and he learned many techniques from him.

So what's next?

It will be interesting to see if Johnson continues his interest in cooking later, or continues to pursue his music -- or both. But one thing is certain; he is eating well now.
